AIB-C01 Exam Logistics and Scoring

Booking, beta-exam mechanics, question types, the compensatory scaled-scoring model, the Early Adopter badge deadline, and how to read a score report.

Everything procedural about AIB-C01, in one place, so nothing about test day is a surprise.

A discrepancy in AWS’s own material

The certification page states 170 minutes; the exam guide’s “Exam duration” section states 130 minutes. We treat 170 minutes as correct because the certification page is the more recently updated source, and our mock exams use it. Check the timer on your own booking confirmation, and plan your pacing for both cases: 170 minutes gives you 2 minutes per item; 130 minutes gives you 1 minute 32 seconds. Practising at the tighter figure costs you nothing.

Question types and how they are scored

  • Multiple choice – one correct response and three distractors.
  • Multiple response – two or more correct responses out of five or more options. You must select all correct responses to receive credit; there is no partial credit.
  • Unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing. Never leave an item blank.

Because the exam is scaled, a raw percentage does not translate directly into a score. AWS does not publish the mapping, and the number of scored versus unscored items on a beta exam is not published either. Anyone who tells you “700 means 70%” is guessing.

What “beta exam” changes

  1. Item validation is part of the purpose. AWS uses beta exams to validate question performance before items appear on standard exams. Some items you see may never be used again.

  2. Results take longer. Beta results are not immediate the way standard exam results are; AWS’s Before Testing policies describe the differences. Plan for a wait rather than a same-day answer.

  3. The official practice exam is not available. AWS’s exam prep plan on Skill Builder offers the Official Practice Question Set and instructor-led question walkthroughs, but the full Official Practice Exam is not offered during beta. That is precisely the gap our two 85-item mocks are designed to fill.

  4. The price is lower. 50 USD versus the 100 USD standard price.

  5. You can be among the first credential holders. Candidates who pass the beta hold the certification from launch, and certifying by 15 February 2027 also earns the Early Adopter badge.

Booking

  1. Go to the certification page and choose Schedule your exam.
  2. Sign in with your AWS Certification account (Pearson VUE handles delivery).
  3. Choose test centre or online proctored. Online proctoring requires a quiet private room, a clear desk, a working webcam and microphone, and a stable connection; you cannot have anyone else enter the room.
  4. Select English or Japanese. If English is not your first language, check whether you are eligible for the standard ESL testing accommodation (extra time) — it is requested through your certification account before booking, not on the day.
  5. Bring the identification your confirmation email specifies. Name mismatches are the most common reason candidates are turned away.

Reading your score report

You receive a scaled score, the pass/fail designation, and possibly a table classifying your performance at section level. Two cautions AWS states directly, and one of our own:

  • The section table is general information, not a precise per-domain percentage. Use it to direct revision, not to calculate anything.
  • The model is compensatory: strength in Domain 2 genuinely offsets weakness in Domain 1. You do not need to clear a bar in each domain.
  • Our own caution: with four domains at 24–28%, a single weak domain is roughly a quarter of the exam. Compensatory scoring makes one weak domain survivable, not two.

Pacing plan for 85 items

First quarter2140 min31 min
Half4382 min63 min
Three quarters64122 min94 min
All answered85160 min122 min
Review flagged–last 10 minlast 8 min

Practical rule: if an item has taken you more than three minutes, answer it with your best guess, flag it, and move on. Multi-response items and long organisational scenarios are the usual time sinks, and they carry the same single mark as a one-line definition item.

Two weeks before

  • Sit Mock Exam 1 untimed as a diagnostic; note your two weakest domains.
  • Re-read those domain pages and redo their in-page questions.
  • Work the six case studies — they train the reasoning the long items reward.
  • Skim the frameworks appendix until CAF perspectives, the responsible AI dimensions and the shared responsibility split are recall-level.
  • Sit Mock Exam 2 timed at 170 minutes, then again mentally at 130 to check your pacing headroom.
  • Confirm your booking, ID, and — for online proctoring — your room and equipment.
