# OpenAI Glossary

A–Z glossary of every model, product, API surface, tool, control and concept used across the six OpenAI preparation tracks, tagged by track.

Every term below appears in at least one of the six OpenAI preparation tracks. Each entry gives the definition, why it matters for the assessments, and which tracks lean on it most. This is independent study material built from publicly available OpenAI learning objectives — see the [credential landscape](/openai/credentials/), the [learning sequence](/openai/learning-path/) and the [assessment model](/openai/assessment-model/) for how the Academy assessments and our independent mock exams relate.

Track tags: **F** = AI Foundations · **AP** = Applied AI · **AG** = Agents and Workflows · **API** = API Developer Path · **CX** = Codex · **L** = AI Leadership.

## A

**Acceptance criteria** – The specific, testable conditions an output must meet to be accepted. Distinct from a vague goal; they are what a review gate checks and what a workflow contract records. *AP AG CX*

**Accredible** – The badge platform that issues and hosts OpenAI Academy badges once a course assessment is passed at ≥ 80%. Support for badge issues routes to Accredible; course, enrolment and progress issues route to Gradual. On the assessments, know that a badge is a completion credential, not a certification. *F AP AG API CX L*

**Admin API** – OpenAI administrative surface for managing an organisation programmatically: members, projects, keys, and related governance. Distinct from the Analytics and Compliance APIs. Appears in production-operations and governance items. *API*

**Agent (Agents API concept)** – In the Agents API, an Agent is the configured unit: a model, instructions, tools and MCP servers. It is combined with an Environment and run as a Session. Do not confuse the *Agent* config object with the running *Session* instance. *API AG*

**Agent Builder** – A build surface now grouped under the "Legacy APIs" section of the docs. Refer to it as legacy rather than the newest way to compose agents; prefer the Responses API, the Agents SDK or the Agents API. *API*

**Agents and Workflows** – The third Academy course in the Foundations pathway (75–90 min, ChatGPT Work), covering delegation of structured tasks to agents with human oversight. It mirrors the **AG** preparation track. *AG*

**Agents API** – OpenAI-managed agent runtime (`/v1/agents/sessions`, header `OpenAI-Beta: agents=v1`, beta) that runs the Codex harness: OpenAI runs sessions, orchestration, context compaction and recovery; you supply tools and pick the environment. Choose it for durable cloud agents, hosted sandboxes and long-running work. Constraint: US data residency only, no ZDR. *API AG*

**Agents SDK** – Open-source Python/TS framework you run yourself: agent definitions, models and providers, running and sandboxing agents, orchestration, guardrails, results and state, integrations, observability and agent evals. Choose it when you want code-first control and self-hosted execution. Contrast the OpenAI-managed Agents API. *API AG*

**AGENTS.md** – The Codex agent-configuration file placed in a repository that tells the agent how to work in that codebase: conventions, commands, constraints. The single most exam-relevant Codex file for steering behaviour without touching global config. *CX*

**AI Foundations** – The first Academy course (60–75 min, ChatGPT): AI basics, prompting, context and responsible use. Delivered inside ChatGPT as the pilot certification. Mirrors the **F** track. *F*

**AI for College Students** – Standalone Academy course (45 min, ChatGPT) on study planning, group work, writing and career prep. Not part of a pathway. *F*

**AI for Educators** – Standalone Academy course (45 min, ChatGPT) on lesson planning, activities, assessments and communications. Not part of a pathway; distinct from ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers on Coursera. *F*

**Structured outputs** – Constraining a model's response to a defined schema (for example JSON) so it can be parsed reliably. The exam-correct answer whenever downstream code must consume the output. Pair with function calling. *API AG*

**Study mode** – A ChatGPT feature that guides a learner through material with questions and explanations rather than just answers. Referenced in Foundations and education contexts. *F*

**Subagents** – Delegated agents that a parent agent spawns to handle parts of a task, in the Agents API (`multi_agent`) and Codex (Ultra). Enable parallelism at the cost of coordination overhead. *API AG CX*

**Sycophancy** – A model's tendency to agree with or flatter the user rather than give an accurate or critical answer. A responsible-use failure mode to watch for, distinct from hallucination. *F AP L*

## T

**Terraform provider** – An infrastructure-as-code provider for managing OpenAI platform resources declaratively, part of the infra-and-ops surface. Appears in API production and governance items. *API*

**Token** – The unit of text a model processes and is billed on (roughly a word-piece). Pricing is per million tokens (MTok), and context windows are measured in tokens. The foundational cost-and-limit concept. *F AP API*

**Tool search** – A capability that lets an agent find the right tool from a large set rather than being handed a fixed list, useful when many tools are available. Part of the tool surface. *API AG*

## U

**Ultra (Codex reasoning)** – The top Codex reasoning level: automatic delegation to subagents working in parallel. Enable it via Settings → Configuration → "Ultra in model picker slider" if absent. Contrast Max, which is more thinking on one task. *CX*

## V

**Vector store** – An index of embeddings that supports fast semantic similarity search over documents, backing file search and RAG. Choosing chunking and what to store are its key design decisions. *API*

**Vision (fine-tuning)** – Fine-tuning that adapts a model on image inputs, one of the supported fine-tuning methods alongside SFT, DPO and RFT. All latest API models already accept image input by default. *API*

**Vision (model capability)** – The ability of the latest models to accept image input alongside text. Enables document understanding, screenshots and computer use. *API AP*

## W

**Web search** – A built-in tool that lets a model retrieve current information from the web, filling the gap left by a knowledge cutoff. One of the core tools for grounding. *API AG AP*

**WebRTC / WebSockets / SIP** – Transport options for the Realtime and voice APIs: WebRTC and WebSockets for low-latency streaming, SIP for telephony integration. Referenced in voice/realtime items. *API*

**Webhooks** – HTTP callbacks that notify your system when an event occurs (for example an Agents API session emitting an item or completing), so you do not have to poll. Pair with background mode. *API AG*

**Workflow** – A predefined sequence of steps with explicit inputs, outputs and checks, as opposed to an agent that decides its own path. Applied AI is largely about designing reliable workflows before reaching for agents. *AP AG*

**Workflow contract** – The agreed inputs, outputs, constraints and acceptance criteria for a workflow step, so each stage can be built and verified independently. The Applied AI discipline that makes decomposition reliable. *AP AG*

**Workload identity federation** – Authenticating workloads to OpenAI without long-lived secrets, using federated identity across K8s, AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI, GitHub Actions, SPIFFE and X.509. A production security control. *API CX*

**Worktrees (git)** – Multiple working directories for one repository, letting Codex run parallel tasks on different branches without collisions. Part of Codex environment modes. *CX*

**Workspace agents** – A ChatGPT feature for agentic work inside a workspace, referenced among the ChatGPT surfaces the non-developer tracks cover. *AP AG*

## Z

**ZDR (Zero Data Retention)** – A configuration in which request data is not retained. Note the constraint: the Agents API managed harness does not offer ZDR (and a self-hosted sandbox does not change that), which can rule it out for sensitive workloads. *API L*
